The AbleGamers Foundation News Room

Star Wars: the Old Republic earns the annual award for extreme accessibility in any mainstream game for BioWare and LucasArts.

Harpers Ferry, WV - January 20, 2012 - The AbleGamers Foundation is proud to announce BioWare’s Star Wars: the Old Republic is the winner of this year's Accessible Mainstream Game of the Year award.  Each year, the AbleGamers Foundation looks at all of the mainstream video game titles released in a given year for the best use of accessibility in a game. Recipients must demonstrate excellence in accessibility by including options that allow for gamers with a wide range of disabilities to fully enjoy the game.

Many of the larger releases cut accessibility or place it on the list of things to be patched in later on down the road, but SWTOR took the time to add things like colorblind friendly options, full subtitles, and control options to let those with mobility impairments play the game as easy as possible.

“It's very rare to see a game of this caliber initially released with so many accessibility options,” said Mark Barlet, president of the AbleGamers Foundation. “BioWare did a wonderful job including a large number of options right at launch with the promise of including more as soon as possible.”

“We were absolutely inundated with requests to review Star Wars: the Old Republic before the game was even released,” said Steven Spohn, editor-in-chief of ablegamers.com. “Thousands of gamers regardless of their disability wanted to know if they would be able to play this highly anticipated game. Fortunately, we were able to report the majority of disabled gamers will be able to play SWTOR.”

The AbleGamers Foundation gives those grants for gaming equipment for those wounded warriors.

Harpers Ferry, WV –December 23, 2011– The Ablegamers Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to the disabled gamer, was proud to support those that served. The Disabled Veteran Grant 2011 awarded two Xbox 360 gaming systems complete with a one-year subscription to Xbox live Gold, and one completely customized Xbox controller from Evil Controllers to the recipients of the annual event.

“Applicants submit requests for their most desired gaming related items that improve their lives or grant them increased accessibility,” says AbleGamers Editor-In-Chief Steve Spohn. “Each year The AbleGamers Foundation awards gaming equipment to as many disabled veterans as donations allow for the current year. With the economy in rough shape, donations were down significantly in 2011, but we wanted to make sure to give some holiday cheer to as many disabled veterans as possible.”

“We are incredibly honored to be able to give something back to the brave men and women who have sacrificed their health to protect the freedoms of this great country,” said Mark Barlet, President and Co-Founder of the Ablegamers Foundation. “As a disabled veteran myself, I understand firsthand the importance of maintaining the ability to enjoy videogames with our friends and family, especially during the holiday season. The support of our donors and Evil Controllers has been tremendous, and the disabled community has been very supportive of our desire to give the gift of gaming to those who served and paid a price for freedom.”

The Ablegamers Foundation and Evil Controllers Release Plans to Rock Assistive Technology Industry

Harpers Ferry, WV –June 23, 2011– The Ablegamers Foundation and Evil Controllers have partnered together to bring a new line of videogame controllers to the disabled gaming community. Adroit controllers will offer greater accessibility than any special needs controller on the market today enabling gamers with disabilities to play the video games they love at a price they can afford.

“The problem with equipment currently available to help the disabled community get into videogames is that it often costs way more than someone on disability can afford,” said Steve Spohn, Editor-In-Chief of ablegamers.com. “These controllers will be higher quality with lower cost. What's not to love?”

"Evil Controllers is on the cutting edge of controller modifications, so working with the AbleGamers Foundation to get more people gaming was a natural fit." says Adam Coe, CEO of Evil Controller. "I think you are going to like what you see in the next few weeks" “Evil Controllers already builds some of the most cutting-edge modded controllers for the Xbox 360 on the market today. This partnership is the perfect fit. Between the two organizations we’ve designed controllers to fit a wide range of disabilities and enable gamers with disabilities on a much larger scale,” said Mark Barlet, President and Cofounder of the Ablegamers Foundation.

The Adroit controller line will include all of the fan favorite features available on Evil Controllers mods with the focus on providing accessibility at low cost without sacrificing quality. The first controllers should be available in the early fall and the details on those controllers will be released within the next few weeks.
