AbleGamers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity organization that wields the power of gaming to break down the barriers of economic and social isolation for children, adults and veterans with disabilities.
What is the AbleGamers?
How do you help gamers with disabilities?
We assess people’s challenges and use assistive technology to bridge the gap between ability and desire. There are hundreds of combinations of devices available. Our accessibility experts find the one that works best for each individual person’s unique needs.
After the assessment, we grant them the technology thanks to our generous donors.
Is assistive technology expensive?
Yes. Some more than others. The average cost of a grant to get someone playing video games is $350. For people with severe physical disabilities, the cost can go as high as $5000 for all the specialized equipment needed.
I’m a disabled gamer who needs help. How do I contact you?
You can email us at inquiries@AbleGamers.org to begin the assessment process.
If you already know what assistive technology you need, you can apply for our assistive technology grant. Grants are given out in the order the requests are received and as funding allows.
I love what you do. How can I help?
Fantastic. Thank you for your support. The best way is to get involved through our Donor Drive portal where you can organize a fundraiser such as a stream, bake sale, run, or community event to help us continue getting life-changing controllers and equipment to people with disabilities so everyone can game.
Check out our guide to making a spectacular event.
I don’t have a lot of time. Can I donate directly to your mission?
Yes. All donations are tax-deductible. You can donate a single time or monthly. Click here to donate today.
How much of each donation goes directly to disabled gamers?
We have one of the best ratios for charities with $0.92 of every dollar going directly to AbleGamers’ missions and initiatives.
I can’t give a monetary donation right now. Can I donate my time?
Absolutely. We are always looking for organizers to do community events raising funds and awareness for the mission and initiatives of AbleGamers. Sign up and start organizing an event. You can ask people to donate or sponsor you and others for doing something that doesn’t cost any money to begin, including runs, walks, streams, etc. The sky’s the limit. What cool events can you think of?
I’m a writer/editor/reporter/blogger and I would like to write about the foundation. Do you do interviews or have a press kit?
Absolutely. If you would like to speak to Executive Director and founder Mark Barlet, Chief Operations Officer Steve Spohn, or any of our staff members, please email press@AbleGamers.org
How did AbleGamers get started?
AbleGamers was founded in 2004 by Mark Barlet and Stephanie Walker to enable gamers with disabilities to continue playing games for recreation and rehabilitation regardless of their physical challenges. AbleGamers became an official IRS-recognized charity in 2009.
How does AbleGamers help the disability community?
AbleGamers gives grants of assistive technologies to people with disabilities in need of financial aid enabling them to play video games just like anyone else. We continually reach out to developers and offer guidance on how to design video games with accessibility in mind. And AbleGamers proves expert reviews and information on video games and assistive technology aimed at helping individuals with disabilities make educated purchases.
I’m a streamer and I’d like to help the charity.
We love streamers. If you want to be part of the AbleGamers stream team, email streams@AbleGamers.org
What is Includification?
Includification is an award-winning, free 50 page guide to game accessibility guidelines showcasing best practices for developers to create video games that are as accessible as possible. Using a three-tiered system of good, better and best, Includification describes the most common problems faced in videogames by those with disabilities and how to make sure everyone can access a game.
You can read Includification online or download and print out the document for you and your team to refer to as a manual.
Includification is a great start, but I’d really like your team to look over my game. Do you do consultations?
Yes. AbleGamers has the most knowledgeable game accessibility team in the industry with over 50 years of combined experience. We would be happy to look at your game whether you are an indie starting out or the head of a AAA development team.
Are AbleGamers Accessibility Consultations free?
We’ve given and continue to get free advice on how to make games more accessible through the document above. We’re also happy to give free tips and tricks to make a game more accessible whenever possible.
However, doing an in-depth accessibility consultation is a very time-heavy request. If you want to know everything that could be problematic and the solutions to those problems, we will have to put one or more of our accessibility experts on evaluating your game. We’re happy to do it, but there is a cost to us. Email inquiries@AbleGamers.org and we’ll discuss further details.
