A Farewell to a Friend – Susan Banks
One of the hardest parts about being in the accessibility field is that many of the people to work with every day have terminal illnesses. Susan Banks was one of those amazing allies.
This month we lost a brilliant light in the fight for accessibility. On March 5, 2019, Susan passed away after a second stroke in as many days. She, her partner, and her family all knew that this day was coming because of her disability but it hurts those left behind all the same.
I encourage you to read this heartfelt thread from Courtney, Susan’s partner, to know more about what happened that day. This is a very heavy subject with some passionate words that hit close to home for many of us.
We mourn the loss of our friend and ally but are thankful for the time that we were given and the fighting that still goes on in Susan’s name. AbleGamers was lucky to have interviewed her for our community spotlight just a few months ago. Check out what she had to say and how you can learn more about CanIPlayThat.
In October of 2018, Susan was featured as our AbleGamers Community Member of the Month. We invite you to read this insightful interview article about Susan’s challenges, her successes, and her goal to make the gaming community accessible for all, with a particular focus on those who are deaf — the same disability Susan lived with.
