Video games are more than entertainment.

For Elvin, video games are more than just a source of entertainment. “They’re so important because it’s one more way my brain gets challenged in a safe, fun, and entertaining way,” he says. “It teaches you about things depending on the game, and it just lets you explore, imagine, and enjoy. It really improves my mental health.”

Elvin first learned about AbleGamers through his occupational therapist at Mount Sinai during a time when his mental health was struggling and he needed a positive outlet. “My mental health was being challenged, and I didn’t know what to put all that energy into. My occupational therapist told me about AbleGamers. AbleGamers helped right away. It was so cool, amazing, great—and it really helped me when I was down and out,” Elvin recalls.

Through AbleGamers’ Peer Counseling program, Elvin received personalized support to re-engage with his passion for gaming. As part of this support, AbleGamers provided him with a PS4 and adaptive gaming equipment including a PS4 DualShock Controller with a 3D-printed one-handed dual shock snap-on device that allows for one-handed use that made it easier for him to play. And, of course, a few video games to get him playing. With this new setup, Elvin was able to play his favorite racing games—Need for Speed: Heat, Need for Speed: Rivals, and Gran Turismo—in ways that were once challenging for him. “The AbleGamers Peer Counselor hooked me up, as we say,” Elvin shared. “It was an amazing experience. I was shy at first, but he made it really comfortable, and I’m grateful for that.”

Since receiving the adaptive equipment and connecting with AbleGamers, Elvin’s life has changed. “It’s amazing—less stress, and my mental health is better,” he says. Now, Elvin enjoys playing his favorite games with a setup designed specifically for his needs. Thanks to the personalized equipment and ongoing support, Elvin has rediscovered the joy of gaming and found a supportive community that understands the power of play.

Elvin’s story is a testament to the incredible impact that adaptive gaming can have, not just on physical abilities but also on emotional well-being. Through the help of AbleGamers and video games, he’s been able to reduce stress and embrace the joy and freedom that gaming brings.

Playing video games is a valuable social activity that helps reduce social isolation by connecting people across distances and diverse backgrounds. Through multiplayer games, online communities, and cooperative gameplay, individuals can interact, collaborate, and build friendships. These virtual interactions provide a sense of belonging and support, fostering meaningful connections that transcend physical barriers. By engaging in shared gaming experiences, players can combat loneliness and create a supportive social network, making video games a powerful tool for enhancing social well-being.
